How we estimate
The first year counts as about 15 human years and the second as about 9, for a medium-sized dog. After that we add about 5 human years a year for a medium dog, and 4, 6 or 7 for small, large or giant dogs, following charts that go by size. Months count in between.
Life stages follow the American Animal Hospital Association's 2019 guidelines. Where their ages are a range, we name both stages.
The senior years have no fixed age: they are the last quarter of a dog's expected lifespan. AAHA says small dogs may not be seniors until around 12, and a large dog can be one as early as 7 to 8, so we say "mature adult or senior" from 12 for small dogs and from 7 for the rest.

Questions
Is one dog year seven human years?
Not quite. Published charts count the first two years as much more, about 24 human years together, and fewer human years for each year after that.
Why does size change the answer?
Charts that go by size count more human years for each year after the second for bigger dogs, so we do too: 4 a year for small dogs, 5 for medium, 6 for large and 7 for giant.
Is there one for cats?
Yes, the cat age calculator. Cats count the same for the first two years, then about 4 human years a year.
